By caring for orphaned and underprivileged children in a village outside the capital Kinshasa, Espoir Congo not only keeps these vulnerable children from ending up living on the streets, but aims to fight poverty and disease by providing what they need to have a good start in life, through education, medical care, access to clean water, and distribution of food and other basic necessities. In 2006, a food and medicine distribution program for orphaned children was started in Kikimi, in collaboration with a Congolese association named SABEC, who helped to identify the orphans and takes the legal responsibility for these children.
As is customary in Congo, the orphaned children have been placed with relatives like a grand-mother who will care for the child. Each child receives a food package weekly.
Thanks to donations from local concerned companies and individuals, Espoir Congo provides food, clothing, shoes, toys and hygiene products for these children.
Additionally, daily vitamins, nutrients and needed medicines are supplied.
In 2010, Espoir Congo built a primary school on the property, along with a dispensary, where the orphaned children now receive free education and medical care.
At the onset of each new school year, the orphaned children receive new uniforms from Espoir Congo and all students receive needed notebooks and pens.
Whether it be food, medicines, or a big hug, Espoir Congo attempts to meet these children’s needs.
