May 2019
Dear friends,
Thank you for your prayers for Gino. He landed safely in Kinshasa on the 25th of April and was able to find proper housing after a few days in a good location. Things are calm in Kinshasa and everyone is hoping that things will change for the better once the new government is put in place. Prices have skyrocketed though since last year, and for now life continues to be a struggle. Thanks to modern technology we are able to keep in touch daily, which is a big blessing!
1 Girls’ Education and Gender Equality
Thanks to We Lift Up (https://weliftup.org/project/girls-education-in-the-congo/), all 53 girls have received their first pack of sanitary pads, which will help them not to miss a day of school and to all be there on their final examination day, just like the boys!
GGMart, the company where we purchased the packs, gave us a discount, which enabled us to purchase extra packages which will be given to all the new mommies who deliver their baby at our clinic. These girls and women are so thankful.
2 Maternity
This month, we were blessed with more new babies.
3 Construction
The walls of the staff housing are going up, the electrician has run all the main wiring and the masons have finished the sewage system.
On WeLiftUp, the goal has almost been reached for the solar panels. Please share the link on social medias https://weliftup.org/project/3-solar-panels-for-school-housing-in-congo/ and pray for the Lord’s full supply.
4 Youth Ministry/Seminar
Gino has started holding a special seminar every Sunday for our Youth leaders and main Bible teachers, following a course that highlights our fundamental Christian beliefs and what we have in common with other groups or denominations. There is a lot of confusion in Congo among the many different churches, which leads to disunity, as people often lack the foundation of what the Bible truly teaches. Our Youth leaders often have to face these erroneous beliefs and need strengthening in the Word to better give an answer to those who ask them (1 Peter 3:15). This course covers topics such as the Divinity of Jesus, the Trinity, the Incarnation, the Nature and Character of God, the Holy Spirit, Sin and Salvation. It is also a time of spiritual fellowship, praise and worship for our little group who have become the pillars of our mission.
5 Prayer needed for our Congolese partners
Gerse: We mentioned last month about one of our Youth Leaders and Bible teachers, Gerse, who works as a doctor at Kinshasa’s Central Hospital. Gino just found out that, since he started working there seven months ago, he has not received any salary! In Congo, general practitioners are even required to perform surgery, yet they are not being paid, even though that particular hospital is fully supported financially by the European Union. Please pray that the new government will change things so that people can receive a decent salary.
Theo (Our partner and director of the Kikimi project): He had an accident while riding on a motorbike taxi (this is a common yet dangerous means of transport in Kinshasa), he hurt his arm requiring stitches. Thank you for praying for his full recovery as he is unable to drive at the moment.
6 Thank You
Thank you so much for your support in prayer, in deed and in truth! We are very grateful to our local sponsors who keep the children well fed: Mr. Mahesh, SOKIN, MARSAVCO, CONGO FOODS (Mr. Abdul). Thank you also to Marie-Thérèse, Yvan & Renate who faithfully help support the education of some of the students. Thank you to Steven Leuthold Family Foundation, and We Lift Up, for their financial support, to FCF for their invaluable backing, and to all those who preferred to remain anonymous. You make it all possible!
If you can look at the sunset and smile, and find beauty in the colors of a small flower, then you still have hope.
If you meet new people with a trace of excitement and optimism, and if you give people the benefit of the doubt, then you still have hope.
Hope is such a marvelous thing. It bends, it twists, it sometimes hides, but rarely does it break. It sustains us when nothing else can. It gives us reason to continue and courage to move ahead, when we tell ourselves we’d rather give in.
Hope puts a smile on our face when the heart cannot manage. Hope puts our feet on the path when our eyes cannot see it. Hope moves us to act when our souls are confused of the direction.
Hope is a wonderful thing, something to be cherished and nurtured and something that will refresh us in return. It can be found in each of us and it can bring light into the darkest of places. So never lose hope.
