The joy of learning — October 2018
Education:
The French School of Kinshasa just donated 324 school books to our primary school (French, science, spelling, english, history, geography, reading, math, geometry, exercise books) as well as some games. We are so grateful for them, along with the kids who are so eager to learn and to improve their education.
To instill in his 1st grade students a love for arithmetic’s, our teacher organized a fun competition between the boys and the girls to count sticks and take measurements. Needless to say, the kids had a great time.
Medical Center: Since the inhabitants of Kikimi have access to clean water now that we have the well, the number of water-borne diseases has greatly diminished, which is giving Florence more time to tune in to the pre and postnatal care.
This month, the Health Ministry organized a day for inoculation against polio. The doctor who came for that purpose took advantage of the opportunity to give a consultation to the many patients, pregnant mothers and children who came on that day.
University Scholarships:
Jacques: He just completed his 4th year of studies in agronomy at the University of Kinhasa and is preparing his thesis. His major is in forestry. Besides his studies, he is very committed as a Christian youth counselor and organizes Bible studies with the young people on campus. We are very proud of him.
Ana: She’s entering her 2nd year of medical studies and has already done some internship in our medical center in Kikimi. We pray she will succeed in her studies and that the Lord will give her the strength she needs to persevere in this difficult field that is still very much male dominated in Congo.
Thank you to those who are contributing towards these scholarships. We pray the Lord supplies all of their needs so they can continue to study in good conditions. They have to face so many challenges in this country. (For example, a student needs to pay to do mandatory internship in a company, instead of being the one to receive some kind of compensation.)
“Students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
“Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.”― Plato
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.
For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
Psalm 27:1,4-5
