May 2021
Many wonderful things have happened this month, but just as we were about to tell you about it, we heard of the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano and of the lava that was heading towards the city of Goma, where our brother Richard lives with his family and where Jacques was on a work mission. By a miracle, the lava took a different turn upon reaching the edges of the city, sparing hundreds of thousands lives. A few people did lose their lives while fleeing and several villages were destroyed by the lava, and our hearts go out towards those who have lost everything, but we can praise God for his protection on most of the population, including Richard’s family who was able to return home and Jacques who was relocated to Lubumbashi. Please pray against the tremors and the toxic air that are following the eruption and for those who have lost their homes and are searching for their missing children. We just received this message from Richard: “The tremors continue and today it is volcanic ashes that dominate the city of Goma.” For more info: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-p8UbSUSeEU

1 Goods Distribution
In commemoration of his wife’s passing, dear Mr. Suresh, with the help of Mrs Neema, donated a very large amount of goods for our children and mothers in Kikimi: food items (rice, maize, sugar, biscuits), 5 large bundles of baby clothes, diapers, shoes and winter clothing for the dry season. Needless to say, everyone is so very thankful. Theo and Florence distributed some of the goods right away on that special day and saved the rest for future needs in the coming months.
2 Education
A teacher’s training seminar was held this month on a Saturday for the primary school teachers and the children have started rehearsing for the graduation day that will take place at the end of the school year.
Fabrice has finalized the statutes for the NGO he has created in order to facilitate the children’s ministry. He has also opened a new group in another part of the city. Join him on Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/groups/661909007863015
3 Medical center/Maternity
Ana (daughter of Theo and Florence) is in her 3rd year of medical school and comes to help in our center in Kikimi for work experience. We are so proud of her as she has to face many obstacles as a woman to persevere in this line of studies in this country.
4 Construction and Gardening
“Compassion does not just happen. Pity does, but compassion is not pity. It’s not a feeling. Compassion is a viewpoint, a way of life, a perspective, a habit that becomes a discipline—and more than anything else, compassion is a choice we make that love is more important than comfort or convenience.”—Glennon Doyle Melton
